Pink Boots Black IPA

The Pink Boots Society is an organization that supports women in the brewing profession through increasing access to educational opportunities. Every year, as part of a movement to recognize the contributions of women to the brewing industry, Yakima Chief Hops releases a unique hop blend chosen by members of the society to be used in collaborative brew days by breweries all over the world. Proceeds from the sale of the hop blend and from the sale of collaborative brew day beers are donated back to Pink Boots and are used to fund scholarships for further education in brewing. This IPA was brewed by the women of pFriem using the 9th Annual Hop Blend from YCH, featuring a blend of Ekuanot, Centennial, HBC 638, and Mosaic for a modern Black IPA with a smooth, and vibrantly fruity finish.

History

By the 1790’s the British were established in India and needed beer, which was considered a staple in every household. India, however, presented serious problems for brewers. Hot temperatures, poor water and short supplies of basic ingredients made it impossible to brew beer. Attempts to ship beer out of Britain to Calcutta failed.

George Hodgson of London produced a pale ale of greater strength and bitterness than those he sold in London. The hops helped protect the beer from spoilage, as did the increased alcohol content. Hodgson’s India Ale arrived in Calcutta in fine shape-clear, strong, and bitter, with a big, resinous hop aroma.  The word spread of India Pale Ale and people throughout England and the United States were clamoring for this wonderful new beer. The rage lasted through 1970’s, but lost steam in the 1980’s and became just another name for low alcohol bitters.

As craft beer has emerged and grown, so has IPA! IPA has helped grow Craft Beer to what it is currently today. There are now many shapes and forms of IPA, but they all share a bright aromatic hop aroma of citrus, tropical fruit, and pine.

We brewed this Black IPA to celebrate and support the vital contributions of women and non-binary professionals in the craft beer industry. By partnering with the Pink Boots Society, we are proud to contribute to their mission of providing educational scholarships and professional development opportunities. This beer is a tribute to the boundary-pushers who lead our industry forward, and it serves as a toast to the community and collaboration that make craft brewing so resilient and diverse.

To bring this vision to life, we featured the 9th Annual Pink Boots Hop Blend, a special selection curated for its vibrant aromatic profile. We chose the Black IPA style specifically to showcase the beautiful contrast between these hops and a dark malt backbone. The bright, citrusy, and tropical notes of the blend cut through the deep, roasted flavors of chocolate and coffee, resulting in a beer that is as complex and bold as the individuals it celebrates.

Tasting Notes

This beer pours midnight black with a frothy, cappuccino like foam. The aroma brings big strawberry and roast qualities accompanied by pine and chocolate covered orange peel undertones. Upon the palate this Black IPA brings flavors of cherries, douglas fir tips and tiramisu. This beer finishes robust and balanced with supporting roast and bitterness.
