History

(Words from Dave Carpenter): Given our continued adoration of the American IPA, it was only a matter of time until someone applied the tenets of India pale ale to lager. India Pale Lager (IPL) hasn’t yet achieved style status in the guidelines that govern beer competitions, but it’s qualitatively different enough that it doesn’t really fit into the IPA or American Pale Lager categories. Look for this exciting style to gain more prominence as our appreciation for lager increases alongside our perennial thirst for Humulus lupulus.

This IPL was brewed in collaboration with our friends at Beachwood Brewing in Southern California. We wanted to use classical lager techniques, combine them with new school American hops, and West Coast hopping procedures. The result is an incredibly smooth lager base exemplified by very aromatic and fruity hops.

Tasting Notes

pFriem+Beachwood IPL shines brilliantly in toasted gold with billowing white foam.  Aromas of freshly sliced mango, white grape, and cinnamon-dusted papaya bound from the glass. A duet of fruity American hops and spicy lager yeast dances gently over the pallet, hinting at pineapple, winking at white pepper. And then, too soon, with glimmers of mango and pine wafting in their wake, they’re gone.     

Food Pairings

Fatty meats in curry sauce and jerk chicken. Excellent with seafood: fish, shellfish, turbot calamari, crab, clams, sole, shrimp, oysters and lobster. Oily fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, and herring. Sausages including chorizo, andouille, and merguez bacon, sausage, and any other breakfast meats work wonderfully.
