History

In celebration of our 13th anniversary we set out to create a beer that was a testament to both tradition and innovation. This crisp, light and tropical beer is a nod to our lager brewing tradition while playing with new ingredients. Brewed on a foundation of light pilsner malts and an ancient West African grain, Fonio, this lager incorporates fruit forward hops with the use of Mandarina Bavaria and Nelson. Often called the “seed of the universe”, Fonio is one of Africa's oldest grains having been cultivated for over 5,000 years. This grain has properties that make it remarkably resilient and drought-resistant and plays a vital role in soil health and regeneration! Not only is this grain great for both soil and nutrition, it has recently been discovered to make great beer. Passionately championed by Brooklyn Brewery’s Brewmaster Garrett Oliver, the use of fonio in craft beer has emerged! This grain in beer contributes wine-like aromas reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc, think lychee, gooseberry and mango, while contributing a soft, round and silky mouthfeel. Paired with expressive and fruit forward hops this beer drinks light, crisp, refreshing and crushable - a perfect accompaniment to a hot summer's day.
